Site Remediation
Soil Remediation Process

GCD | PDI offers a four step site remediation and soil remediation services for commercial, industrial, municipal, and brownfield sites.

Site Assessment
We start with a comprehensive assessment determining the level of soil contamination. Our methods of assessment include soil sampling and lab testing. The testing informs us of the composition and concentration of pollutants which directs the proper remediation method for the project.

Remediation Planning
We develop a plan to remediate the soil. There are three methods for removing contaminants from soil which are bioremediation, chemical remediation, and thermal treatment.

Bioremediation
is the process of using biological organisms to remove the contaminants or transform pollutants into a nontoxic form.
Chemical remediation treats contaminants with chemical reactions completely neutralizing pollutants.
Thermal treatment applies heat to contaminated soil removing pollutants from contaminated soil

Site Preparation & Remediation
Once our plans are complete, we send our teams to prepare the contaminated site for remediation. Part of the preparation process includes removing surface debris, vegetation, or structures that may halt progress. Most soil remediation can be done on-site; however, heavily contaminated soil needs to be remediated off-site in a treatment center.

Post-Remediation Testing & Documentation
After the clean-up is complete, we conduct verification testing to ensure the site meets all federal, state, and local regulatory standards. We also provide closure reports and documentation required for repurposing the site.

Consequences of Soil Contamination

Soil contamination can have adverse effects if not treated properly. Soil contamination pollutes groundwater leading to environmental concerns and pose as a serious health risk. That is why professional soil remediation is critical for any redevelopment projects built on contaminated land.

There are three major contributors to soil contamination:

  • Organic Contamination: Pesticides and herbicides
  • Inorganic Contamination: Chemicals, heavy metals, and acids
  • Physical Contamination: Plastics and debris mixed in the soil

These pollutants often result from natural occurrences, industrial or mining activity, chemical spills, improper waste disposal, or underground storage tank leaks.
